I spent the next few days exploring Wulingyuan Scenic Area right outside of Zhangjiajie city in northwestern Hunan. The area’s call to fame is that Avatar’s director and production designers used these mountains for inspiration for the movie’s floating mountains. This park was huge and the scenery was really, really beautiful. The mountains looked like splintered, rocky pinnacles that were shrouded in mist.
