We went on a hike out to the countryside today and came along this river. There were probably hundreds of these bamboo rafts with chairs tied to them. The raft owners shouted “bamboo! bamboo!” at every single tourist that walked by – the one English word that they knew. We declined a bamboo. The stationary bamboos were in a small dammed lake and once they had a passenger who wanted to continue up the river they had to go over the dam on a conveyor belt. This was so strange to watch. The rafts would get in line behind each other to wait for their turn up this moving belt that sort of just threw them out on the other side.
