I’ve been trying to get a picture of China’s rapid development in the middle of nowhere for a long time now. Katie and I hiked out of the city to visit a Buddhist monastery that she had been to about seven months ago. She thought we would be able to see it right after we got out of a tunnel, but the monastery was nowhere to be found. Eventually we realized that all of these buildings had just been built since the last time she had been there and the monastery was right behind them. These random, huge apartment buildings aren’t near the city at all – they’re on the side of a highway with literally nothing nearby. This seems to be happening everywhere and even in cities the skyscrapers aren’t built close to each other. It’s like these giant buildings are just plunked down somewhere solely for the sake of building them.
